What I I Have to Say About...

John Edwards.  Just shut up.  Classic case of someone who is only sorry because they got caught.  I'm sorry, but seriously.  It is great that you and wifey are "best friends" and "soul mates" and so on and even renewed your wedding vows (whew - vows are upgradable!) but it's too late in the eyes of the public, at least with me it is.  I'm sure you don't care John Edwards because I am not the one married to you.   Is everyone else saying, "how stupid do you have to be to be skirting around with the other woman when there is paparazzi and tabloids just mouth watering for the chance to bust you!?"  Affairs are bad in any case but I just don't ever have any sympathy for such high profile individuals who reason on the level of a junior high school kid.  Not to mention this man was running for president!  Did he not consider that PRESIDENT at one time was THE position that Americans looked up to?  kids wanted to become???

Michael Phelps.  Being named "the greatest athelete of all time" is a stretch for me.  I have no doubt that he is an INCREDIBLE swimmer.  But this guy is still new and has more time to put in, plain and simple.  Comparing him to such great names as Muhammed Ali, Michael Jordan, Jackie Robinson, etc. is just a little uncomfortable for me.  Prodigy turn legend over night, meh.
  What are your thoughts?

Ok, did anyone hear about or see the cute, little, pigtailed, Chinese girl that sang "Ode to the Motherland" at the Olympic opening ceremonies? Read about it here.
Basically, the original vocalist wasn't deemed cute enough to stand in the spotlight at the opening ceremonies so the little girl that we all saw was just miming the words.  That is just wrong.

In local news, a school bus in South Alabama overturned while driving down a MUDDY, unpaved, backwood dirt road.  Students only suffered minor injuries but parents are in uproar and demanding seat belts be placed on school buses.  The state superintendent is telling the public that in order for a decision such as mandatory seat belts to be implemented it must be backed by research so a study is being done at the University of Alabama to test the effectiveness of seat belts on school buses and this study is going to take three years... OK????  First of all, I would hate to load my child up on a bus that had seat belts knowing that they were only there for research on effectiveness.  Is someone standing around hoping that a bus runs off of a bridge or gets hit by a train to see how well the seat belts work collectively after three years so that then MAYBE we can put seat belts on all school buses because, "well, yep seat belts saved lives."  Second of all, how about pave your driveway.  I'm not talking to the individual families here but a school bus wasn't exactly designed for off-roading, you know?

Does anyone have any good news?

I am so with you on John Edwards...used to really like him but now just see him as an egomaniac.

Not quite on the same wavelength with the Michael Phelps thing. I do agree that it is a little hasty to call him a legend at this point but he is incredibly amazing and worthy of all praise!

The little Chinese girl lip syncing...sick!

Good news:
-I love your new blog design
-I love that though I have never met you, I so appreciate your comments on my blog and love to keep up with your family.

Have a great day!

woooo, someone's on a roll this morning. :-p

As far as Michael Phelps is concerned... I dunno. A valid point was made that he doesn't have to directly go punch for punch against others, and that he doesn't have to hit a 90 MPH fastball, etc.

BUT I'll argue the point about this being an overnight thing. It only seems that way because swimming is a competition we pay attention to once every four years. If you look at his record, he's been absolutely dominating in his career. Also take into account that the Olympics are THE premier sporting events featuring THE premiere athletes in the world, especially in swimming. It's not like baseball where we only send our college kids over to play. Phelps is it, he is the best of the best in America.

He's also fighting against one of the elements of nature that is hardest to conquer: water.

Where I have a problem is crowning anyone best athlete of all time. Tiger would get destroyed by Phelps in a pool. Phelps would get creamed by Tiger on a golf course. I don't think folks should be so quick to jump on the "greatest ever" bandwagon, BUT we also shouldn't be so quick to discount it either. I'm putting this in base terms, so forgive me, but Ali ONLY boxed. Tiger ONLY golfs. Hank Aaron ONLY played baseball. Bo Jackson played baseball and football, but his pro career was incredibly short.

John Edwards ...ugh. I always thought there was something fishy about him. Sleaze Ball....

Phelps is a DAMN great swimmer. He's the best swimmer probably ever. But greatest athlete? I'm with Luke, let's just leave it within the sport genre.

And I thought the "real" singer was cute as a button! they said she was too bucktoothed?? I read somewhere that she said that she was still honored to have her voice as a part of the event. Sheesh - she has more class than any of those commie jerks.

Love your new header! fits purrrfect!

John Edwards: The only surprise here is that any of us are surprised any more by the behavior of public officials.

China as Milli Vanilli: I, for one, am relieved. I was beginning to have warm, fuzzy feelings about the Chinese government.

Michael Phelps: One of the world's greatest athletes? Let's check back with him in 10 years... but One of the Greatest Athletic Achievements in the History of Sports? Oh, yes. Did you SEE that guy's schedule??? When does he get to pee? Besides, he always looks for his Mama when he finishes the races.

School bus seat belts: This argument has raged for years -- and I honestly thought national studies had already been done showing that there is no benefit to the seat belts in a well-designed bus. Of course, re-instituting neighborhood schools would cut down on the number of buses on the road in the first place....

I'll say again -- love the new blog design -- is that one of the pictures Jackie took?

I love it! I need to blog again soon... I feel like it takes time for me to sit down and do it.. obviously it does. As soon as I start one, David usually starts crying or squirming and I know I only have seconds to get that bottle ready. Anyway, what book are you reading... when do you have time to read??? Woow... I am impressed. Also, how's that haircut coming?

Oh China is all about putting only their "pretty people" upfront. There was an ad in the HK paper about 6 months ago (I think I kept it, I'll try to find it), calling for women fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin and English (not uncommon here) to apply to be hosts at the Olympics. "We do not discriminate against size or judge solely on looks." But then further down in the ad, it had measurement requirements. Also, do you know that they repainted all of the buildings and individual houses along the main routes the people would be taking - they are all grey so as to offset the colors of the Olympic banners. But some buildings were only painted on one side, cause that is all people would see. Ridiculous!

I love your rants Laura - they make me laugh!

ok Devils Advocate here ....John Edwards did wrong ...and we ahve all had front row seats seeing what happens when cheating and divorce creeps into our lives. My grandad watched his middle daughter go through it all and after it was all said and done he managed to forgive his former sonnlaw. My aunt even even forgave him in the end ...
I dont know ...
Are the Olympics this summer ????

John Edwards: I really like John so the whole situation sucks, but what is really interesting is how the media is eating him alive for it but completely forgetting how McCain did the same thing a few years back.

China: What hasn't been said about how horrible the place really is? It is quite sad the lengths that nations/people go to present some false image of who they really are.

Phelps: Meh. I guess it depends on your criteria as to best Oympian ever. He has more gold than anyone else, has to mean something.

School Buses: I can't believe it took this long to realize that 35 feet of unrestrained/unsupervised children climbing all over each other was a bad idea.

@ Eleanor: He finds time to pee because he's in the pool all day. Everyone else does it, and that chemical stuff that changes colors if you do is just a myth anyhow.

Eleanor said...

@Nick - Thanks for that. I was considering swimming as my next sport, but I believe I'll take a pass now.....
