I have looked on Target and Babies-r-Us websites for over an hour at dozens of cribs and I don't have the slightest idea what to get and quite frankly I am getting a little stressed about it. How do you decide on what crib - and in our case what TWO cribs - to get when you every other review is something negative. How do you make such a decision?
This is what I know:
-we need two cribs
-I think we are going to use standard sized NON convertible cribs but I can be convinced to buy convertible cribs if you tell me why it would benefit our situation considering our girls will share a room for a long time and two full size beds won't fit in any room in our house
-I like black or white finishes NOT wood cherry, natural, espresso or any other
-we are able to spend up to $300 on one crib though preferably between $200-$250. None of this >$300 business
-buying furniture off of the internet makes me nervous because I feel like I want to touch it before I buy it so maybe I should visit Target, Walmart, Storkland, and other places first and have them order it?
I just don't know.
How did you all make your crib decisions?

It is a big decision. We went with a black convertible crib. Mainly for the fact it turned into a toddler bed. But we want to use for number two and three. We figured it would need to be a crib again before it went to a full bed. After the last toddler bed use it can go to whoever wants a black full sized bed. We went to this place in Mississippi called Woodland furniture. We were able to get his crib (great quality) and his changing table for five hundred. They have name brand high quality furniture at wholesale prices. It is a two hour drive form T-town. So it would really be a trip for you. But have you ever heard of dogtown? They are supposed to have similar type deals. But Woodland has a great children's and baby selection. Not bargain priced stuff but a couple hundred off really quality pieces. But touch as many as you can. Think about how sturdy it is. when the girls can pull up and climb out, and shake the sides. Hope this helps. I feel like Tuscaloosa has a lot of good baby stores. If you are ever up here call and I'd love to look around with you!
I would still suggest getting convertible cribs. It's going to save you more money in the long run by not having to buy more beds. Million Dollar Baby has a set of cribs that are really good. We got ours with no solid panels so we could see through all sides, we got one with no curved bars for ease of climbing out and we got one that has three height levels and a fold down bar to make putting baby in easier as the crib gets lower and we really love it. Baby Bean is 2yrs 3 months and hasn't been able to climb out yet. And she has tried. Also, later when they go to beds if you really can't fit two twin beds in the room you could always let them share a bed and you could use the two twins together as an extra guest bed.
Ok, I know that we are way thriftier than anyone else we know, so you may choose to ignore my advice, but - don't write off second-hand baby beds. Everyone buys cribs, but a lot of people end up putting their baby in bed with them, and never use their crib. You wouldn't believe how many stories I've heard of cribs that were not once used.
Right now, I'm looking for a second hand crib that is solid, like a piece of furniture. I don't like the kind that has spindles - it feels like one good jump, and that thing is going to come crashing down. I haven't found one for Silas yet either, but I still have time.
Asher's converts into a toddler bed, but I don't think it goes any further than that. It was a hand-me-down (from the family we have both taught), but it came from Pottery Barn originally. I've been really happy with it.
